The Home of Eric Morecambe
In the early 19th century Morecambe was just a small fishing village called Poulton-le-Sands. Morecambe Bay, is on the north west coast of England, is a huge sandy bay with a magnificent backdrop of the Lake District.
The town is a smallish seaside town off the Lancashire coast. The Bay is fed by five rivers the Kent, the Leven, the Keer, the Lune and the Wyre
Morecambe is the birthplace of Eric Morecambe of the comedy duo Morecambe and Wise, and of Dame Thora Hird. The most famous sculpture must be the Eric Morecambe Statue. In typical comic pose, Eric Morecambe brings inimitable sunshine to millions of visitors.
The sea front promenade spans about four miles, you could stroll along, taking in the sea breeze and calming scenery along with talented street performers keeping you entertained. Or perhaps you would like to sample Morecambes newly refurbished beaches.
Morecambe Bay is the third most important estuary in Europe. It is a major migratory stopover for many species of birds, It has reflected this in its many bird sculptures, having won the international TERN award. The award-winning Tern Project reflects the bird life of Morecambe Bay, which is a very important breeding ground for thousands of birds.
There is an annual Festival of Water and Light, which attracts thousands of evening visitors. This involves colourful dancing waters, with hundreds of jets rising and falling in time to fully orchestrated music.
The Festival Market is situated on Morecambes promenade traditional covered market with 108 stalls and shops.
Euston Road is currently the main pedestrian area of the Town Centre. It contains many features including New Town Square. It is a tree lined pedestrian area. The most famous are the Morecambe Bay Shrimps which are still caught locally by the family firms like James Baxter and Sons of Morecambe.
Stone Jetty was recently restored and stretching out into the bay, the Stone Jetty has pavement games, sculptures, a baffling maze and a huge compass to plot your position.
Happy Mount Park, is one of the resort's most popular recreation and leisure areas. There are extensive floral arrays and ornamental gardens which in peak season are a profusion of colour and perfumes, where one may simply sit and watch the world pass by. It was created in the 1920s. The park has been revived and has activities for all ages including play areas, swing boats, miniature railway, bowling green, miniature golf, putting green, crazy golf, paddling pool, trampolines, roundabout, multi-purpose sports surface and a Japanese garden.
